My six-year-old daughter has been obsessively finger-knitting for the past month and we have a slew of little yarn-chains all around the house. Although this product says it is for ages seven and up, I figured that if she could finger-knit, she could probably knit with a loom too. The loom, of course, is a bit more complicated than fingers, but with minimal adult guidance, she has indeed been able to do it herself and she's already knitted her first simple hat.

The kit comes with three bunches wii u black friday 2015 of yarn (purple, light pink and bright pink), a large loom which can be used to make hats, purses and other similar items; a double-headed piece with small looms at either end which can be used to make purse handles, belts, etc.; a tassel-maker, two needles, some thread and a few accessories like buttons and beads for jazzing up your creations.

It's a bit tricky to get started initially. You have to anchor your yarn to the anchor peg on the loom, and then go around twice looping the yarn around each peg, being careful so that the single loop is on the outside and the connecting pieces are on the inside. You then anchor the other end of the yarn to the anchor peg while you use the hook to go around and flip the bottom loop over the top loop and off the peg. While wrapping the yarn it can be a bit frustrating because the yarn will slip off if not properly held, necessitating going back and starting that layer all over again. However, my daughter discovered a technique for wrapping and looping simultaneously, thereby negating the need to anchor the yarn or worry about it slipping off. You continue going around the loom layer by layer until you want to change colors or until your piece is finished. There is also a technique for "flat" knitting in order to make panels for a purse, for instance. When you are ready to remove your piece from the loom, simply go once more around, using the yarn to stitch each loop. You can then pull the yarn taught to create the top of the hat.

Even though she's only six, my daughter has already mastered the basic knitting technique. I'm sure it won't be long before she's doing more advanced projects, changing colors, adding tassels, and other decorations. I'm sure an older child will be able to figure out these techniques independently or with minimal adult assistance. Also, my daughter is not usually the calmest or most patient person, but she has been very persistent with this loom and it has kept her occupied (and soothed) for much of an otherwise hectic Christmas. It's great to see her put her creativity and talent to use creating projects that are not only attractive to look at, but are actually useful objects.

The yarn and accessories included in the kit is probably enough to make four to ten projects, depending on how big each project is. The included yarn is also particularly thick, which makes for a nice thick, warm hat. However, pretty much any type of yarn will work, so with a few stops at the craft store, this kit is usable indefinitely, as the loom itself (as well as the belt/handle maker) is quite durable. The needles are pretty small, so you may want to find a permanent home for them in order not to lose them, but then, they are also easily replaceable. The only piece that doesn't seem quite so durable is the tassel-maker, but you could always make a new one out of cardboard.

Overall, I love this kit and I'm excited to see what my daughter will do with it. It's great to see her focused and invested in making her own usable projects. Highly recommended for the crafty kid in your house.

This loom is a wonderful way for little ones to learn to knit. The directions are easy and the kids pick up how to "knit" really quickly. I am so glad I purchased it for my grand daughter.

My 5 year old granddaughter was able immediately to start knitting on the loom. I was very surprised and she just loves it. In this technological age, it is good to see her do something creative.
